I’m itching to kick off the 2027 Deep Dynasty Baseball Positional Rankings, and as always we start with the much maligned catcher position. Well actually, less maligned these days as there are so many exciting catchers out there. As I wrote in the Kansas City Royals Team Report Strategy Section, I find myself wanting one of the good ones more and more these days. But we can’t always get what we want, so if you don’t have one, I’ll do my darndest to find some underrated studs. Last year I gave you Gabriel Moreno, Carter Jensen, and Leonardo Bernal as my targets. I think I was the only man alive to call Leonardo Bernal a target. I also rang the 3 alarm target bell on Liam Hicks very early into the year. On the flip side, I also gave you Francisco Alvarez, Harry Ford, and Gabriel Davalillo. Don’t you guys know to only listen to my correct calls and not my incorrect calls? 😉 … but we’re moving on to 2027 now. Full Rankings on the Patreon. Top 5 free here on the Brick Wall. 1) Drake Baldwin – ATL, C, 26.0 – Drake Baldwin is everyone’s #1 dynasty catcher in the game, and he’s also my #1 dynasty catcher in the game. I would love to have an outlier take at the top of the catcher rankings, but I come by my outlier takes completely naturally. I’m never contrarian for the sake of being contrarian. I form my own opinions, and then sometimes I’m with the masses, and sometimes I’m not. I’m a bit of a lone wolf, but if the pack is headed the way I’m going, I’m happy to join the pack for awhile. Baldwin improved on really the only weakness of his game, launch, by bringing it up 4.5 degrees to a respectable 11 degrees, and he didn’t have to sacrifice any hard hit to do it. He smoked the ball with a 50.6% Hard Hit%. He still doesn’t pull it that much, but when you hit it as hard as he does, he doesn’t have to. It resulted in 25 homers in 138 games, and when you don’t sell out for lift/pull, your BA is the beneficiary with a .284 BA. The plate skills did take a step back from his excellent 2025, but I’ll take that tradeoff for the extra lift. Hitting for both standout average and power while being only 26 years old is a recipe to get you to the top of the catcher rankings. I’m with the pack on this one. – 2027 Projection: 89/27/89/.276/.343/.468/3

2) Rainiel Rodriguez – STL, C/1B, 20.3 – Other than Rainiel, there were two other 19 year olds at Double-A for the majority of the year, Leo and Made, and to say Rainiel’s 151 wRC+ blew them out of the water would be an understatement. If we up the threshold to 20 year olds, only Franklin Arias beat him at 153. But point being, on pure bat, taking speed and projection out of it, Rodriguez straight dominated them. He’s already physically maxed out at bulldog thick 5’10”, and he’s not going to be a major contributor on the bases (11 for 18), but the plate skills (19.1/11.3 K%/BB%), at least plus raw power, and lift/pull (34.1% GB% and 22.2% Air Pull%) are all there. He still needs work defensively and is not a lock to stick behind the plate, but he could end up in that sweet spot where he gets enough run behind the plate to retain eligibility, while playing full time at 1B/DH the rest of the time. That means you get all the benefits of being a catcher without nearly the wear and tear. It does add some annoyance as you try to plan out your long term dynasty roster, but it’s a small price to pay for double plus hit/power potential. – 2027 Projection: 26/10/32/.254/.325/.446/2  Prime Projection: 92/31/101/.271/.356/.508/7

3) Carter Jensen – KCR, C, 23.9 – I was super aggressive with Jensen last off-season, placing him in my Top 100 dynasty assets already at #96, and he delivered by finishing 56th on the Razzball Player Rater. Sure he needed an absolute bonkos final month to get there, jacking 10 homers with a 1.172 OPS in his final 26 games, but he got there all the same. And now I’m going to be super aggressive with him again, ranking him as the #3 dynasty catcher in the game. Like I said in the Baldwin blurb, I come by my outlier takes naturally, and Jensen’s age/power/playing time trifecta deserves this spot. That final month is when his elite level raw power truly showed up with a 93.9 MPH EV and 51.4% Hard Hit%. It sat 91.5 MPH with a 44.8% Hard Hit% on the season, which is still plenty good. We know he’s got huge raw power, so it was only a matter of time for him to go on that heater. I trust the Hard Hit numbers will be much closer to 50% for the full year in 2027, and when that happens, he’s an easy 30+ homer bat with a 20.6 degree launch and 23.1% Air Pull%. That is actually a recipe for 40+ or more in everything goes right seasons. He’s got some hit tool risk with a .239 BA and 28.2% K%, but a 29.7% whiff% really isn’t in the danger zone, so I’m expecting that K% to drop next year too. And he’s a true full time player, DH’ing when he isn’t catching. Jensen is going to be one of the best power hitting catchers in the game for a long time, and if I owned him, I just couldn’t trade him for older options who have warts of their own. – 2027 Projection: 79/32/90/.248/.329/.488/4

4) Shea Langeliers – SAC, C, 29.4 – Being a catcher is absolutely brutal on the human body, and if I were to argue against myself on being aggressive with top catchers this year in dynasty, that would be the reason. They are much more likely to get banged up, beaten and bruised, and that means they are less likely to continue producing deep into their 30’s. I normally wouldn’t ding a player too much at 29 years old in dynasty rankings, but for catchers, it’s getting up there, and I’m not only speaking in generalities when it comes to Langeliers. He tore his meniscus in late July. He was able to return in late September, which is encouraging, but a serious knee injury isn’t great for a guy squatting and popping up constantly. Other than injury and age though, there isn’t much else to dislike. He gets one more year in the launching pad that is Sutter Health Park (and I’m assuming Vegas is going to be a hitter’s park too), and he has the power to take advantage of that. He put up a 13.3% Barrel%, 18.4 degree launch, and 95.3 MPH FB EV, leading to 23 homers in only 106 games. That is an easy 30+ homer bat if he stays healthy. He couldn’t maintain all of the K% gains he made in 2025, but he held onto enough of it at 23.3% to keep his .262 BA solid. He could so easily finish as the #1 catcher in fantasy over the next few years, and he also seems to be sniffing around one of those career year, 40+ homer years. – 2027 Projection: 76/32/84/.258/.325/.485/3

5) Hunter Goodman – COL, C, 27.6 – Even in Coors, a 30.5% K%, 34% whiff%, and 40.4% Chase% deserves some kind of caution. Even if the smallest amount. Those are brutally bad plate skills. The interesting thing is, he actually hit much better on the road (.255 BA with a .882 OPS) than at home (.235 BA with a .791 OPS), but that is kinda leaning into what I’m saying. Which is that I don’t think Coors gives him a total pass for that level of plate skills. That is full on danger zone. Now having said that, his power most certainly makes up for it with a 14.5% Barrel%, 18.6 degree launch and 95.1 MPH FB EV, leading to a beastly 41 homers in 138 games. This season fully backed up his breakout 2025, and taking Ben Rice out of the equation, he finished as the top catcher in 2026. I’m not getting scared off by the plate skills, but it’s why I have him 5th and not higher, and if he ever does leave Coors, it will certainly be a hit to his value. – 2027 Projection: 75/34/87/.240/.304/.493/4
